Momentum Worldwide’s Make It Matter Day focuses on AI literacy and responsible innovation

This November, we held our third annual Make it Matter (MIM) Day at Momentum Worldwide, bringing together over 1,000 employees across our global network for a full day dedicated to learning, with a focus on AI literacy and responsible innovation.

Alison Richardson, Associate Director, Organizational Capability and Strategic Development highlights why this year’s MIM Day was an essential stop on our agency-wide AI Forward Roadmap. Keep reading to learn more…

The Context

Generative AI is rewriting the rules of today’s workplace. Integrating it into everyday workflows has become increasingly important and leveraging it to expand creative potential is now an expectation. Given this, understanding both its power and its limitations so that we can use it thoughtfully is essential.

On Tuesday, November 18, employees from across Momentum Worldwide focused on those skills during our annual Make it Matter Day. This is the day when we come together to explore critical issues related to the three pillars that drive our culture: belonging, sustainability and wellness.

The Event

This year’s Make it Matter Day explored the opportunities and challenges at the intersection of Generative AI and belonging, sustainability and wellness. The goal was to equip employees with tools to be thoughtful users of Generative AI, given its limitations, so we can continue to make the three pillars matter with the choices we make every day.

Through an interactive presentation and small-group discussions developed and led by employees, participants explored:

  • The need to mitigate bias in Generative AI content by understanding the nuances of different customer groups, prompting effectively, and critiquing output.
  • The complexity of Generative AI’s use of energy for individual queries and data centers, current efforts to drive efficiency and sustainability, and how AI can help solve sustainability challenges.
  • The power of our uniquely human strengths – such as creativity, authenticity, nuance and lived experience – to create meaning, help us thrive and drive the impact of our work. We also explored the potential of Generative AI to hallucinate and create echo chambers, and the importance of being proactive users.

The Impact

Make it Matter Day was thought-provoking, stimulated lively conversation, and supported learning. Key takeaways common across discussion groups included:

  • There is a need to take responsibility when using Generative AI by offering context within your prompts and giving it the most information possible to improve the results it provides.
  • It is important to learn practical ways to use AI for day-to-day tasks to genuinely make things easier without losing the human touch.
  • A desire to deepen learning with training on how to get the most out of Generative AI tools tailored to specific departments.

The Roadmap

This year’s Make it Matter Day was an essential stop on our agency-wide AI Forward Roadmap. This transformational work will continue, anchored in a deep understanding of the incredible potential and the limitations of Generative AI. It is our uniquely human strengths – like creativity, authenticity and nuance – that drive the impact of our work.
